Robert Landry would like to sell you furniture for your home, but most of all he wants you to feel at home when you walk into his store. A casual type of guy who has been in the family furniture business since high school, he places his customers' comfort high onhis customer service list.

“It's person to person here at Landry Furniture,” Landry said from his office in the 72,000 sq. ft. store that has seen several expansions since his mother and father moved the original furniture business they opened in 1952 on Cottage Street to this location in 1972. “My Dad used to say if you lose one customers you can lose a thousand; if you take care of one customer, make a thousand,” Landry said.

That philosophy of good personal service was embedded in the young Robert who took over the store's weekly collection route when he got his driver's license. “I'd collect payments from customers. I'd leave at 4:30 and be home at 7 in time for dinner,” Landry recalled. “It was a different time. The handshake was the seal of the sale.”
Robert worked his way up to president and owner of the company. With pride, he says that his loyal staff offers customers a total of 83 years of knowledge of the furniture industry. “And with Barb, my wife and Michelle, both who work part-time, ad another 43 years of experience,” he said.

Landry loves the business he has known all of his life. The most important thing to him he says without hesitation is “loyalty.”

“There's nothing better than to have a long-time customer call and say you have the nicest people working for you. You can't put a price on that,” he said. And when a customer gives any member of the staff accolades, he says, he lets that employee know. “I value them,” he said.

Landry says that he's seen a lot of change in the furniture industry, especially in the importation of products. “My hope is that there will be more domestic, handmade furniture. I think people want domestic made.” Even as the industry changes, Landry Furniture will continue to operate the way it has for 51 years. “We want customers to be comfortable when they come through our doors, Robert reiterates. “That's always the atmosphere when you're buying at Landry Furniture.”
